Redefining Human-Plant Communication Through AI, Performance & Documentary
Études of Emergence represents a groundbreaking intersection of botanical science, cutting-edge sensor technology, and performance art that challenges anthropocentric paradigms by centering plant agency in the creative process—allowing botanical life to co-author the performance in real time. Through live performance, documentary storytelling, and educational programming, the project creates multiple entry points for audiences to engage with interspecies communication and reimagine our relationship with the natural world.
WHAT IS IT?
A Plant-Mediated Performance Ecosystem where living plants become active collaborators, not passive subjects
The Experience:
- Real-time plant bio-signals (root electrical activity, volatile organic compounds, mycorrhizal networks) are translated into sound, scent, touch, and visuals
- AI facilitates genuine two-way dialogue between humans and plants without forcing anthropomorphic translation
- Audiences journey from language-based understanding to pure sensory experience, dissolving the boundary between human and plant consciousness
The Narrative: A man obsessed with knowing. A woman hatched from an egg, rooted in somatic language. As text deteriorates throughout the performance, audience attention heightens to the plant world. By the end, language and logic fall away completely—leaving only sensorial experience and subjective imagination. The piece critiques anthropocentrism and humanity’s quest for absolutes, fostering humility, curiosity, and connection to all consciousness.
