AZUL: Debut feature, inspired by the migration journey of Andrea's family
Ximena, the eldest daughter of an immigrant family, has to balance the weight of her family's emotional traumas and dire financial realities with her own journey of self discovery as she acclimates to life in an upscale Orange County neighborhood.
Azul is a coming-of-age tragicomedy set in 2008 that follows Ximena, a 15-year-old Mexican girl whose family suddenly leaves small town Torreón, Coahuila for Orange County in search of a better future. Struggling to adapt to a new country, language, and culture, Ximena finds herself caught between childhood and adulthood as she becomes her family’s translator, guide, and emotional anchor.
While her parents wrestle with the realities of immigration and economic uncertainty, Ximena navigates high school, first love, friendship, and the painful realization that she no longer fully belongs in either place. As she prepares for her quinceañera, she must decide whether to hold on to the version of herself she left behind in Mexico or embrace the person she is becoming.
Azul is an intimate portrait of adolescence, migration, and identity that explores what it means to build a home between two worlds.
